Background

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its associated disease, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has caused a devastating pandemic worldwide. After two years of a seemingly relentless pandemic, many ask when will we get back to normal and what will life be like after the COVID-19 pandemic? In the long-term, we expect the virus to become one of several respiratory infections which can be mitigated by effective public health interventions to reduce the risk of infection when outbreaks arise. At some point in the future, Covid-19 will be ‘endemic’, meaning it is still with us, but the spread of the disease has become more predictable and at stable maintenance, typically at a lower prevalence. Most people will return to pre-pandemic patterns of behavior during endemic phases, depending on personal risk tolerance. Nevertheless, there are major caveats to transitioning from a pandemic to an endemic, including much is still unknown about the pathophysiology of critical disease and post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) or long COVID, while defining potential and reliable biomarkers to predict those cases will be important in COVID-19 management during an endemic phase. Furthermore, the efficacy of the immune response to an infection is central to shaping the endemic phase. However, durability and correlates of protection, defined as the immunological markers used to reliably predict the level of immune efficacy against a clinically relevant endpoint, are still highly sought through ongoing research. Also, will Omicron be the final SARS-CoV-2 variant, and is the current wave the last big one we will ever experience? Too many uncertain variables can throw a spanner in the works of the most carefully thought estimates. But at least we can speculate a bit based on what we have learned and achieved during these past two years. This webinar will explore five key areas: Novel biomarkers to predict long COVID and fatal cases; Beyond Omicron – what’s after Omicron; Correlate of protections against COVID-19; From pandemic to endemic; and Indonesia’s advancement and contribution to science during the pandemic.

So far, we have had three INA-RESPOND COVID-19 Webinars. The 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd webinars were held on 10 April 2021, 24 July 2021, and 4 December 2021 respectively.  The 4^th webinar will be held on 21 May 2022 (Jakarta time, WIB) 7:00 – 11.00 AM / 20 May 2022 (EST) 7:00 – 11:00 PM.
